How The #MeToo Movement Changed Game Of Thrones

Longtime fans of Game of Thrones can attest to the fact that, after awhile, the series started to show significantly far less nudity. Nevertheless what fans might not know is that the choice to dial down the assortment of nude scenes was heavily influenced by the #MeToo Movement. In a recent interview with Deadline, Carice Van Houton, the actress who played the Red Priestess Melisandre, opened up about the movement's impact on the series and why she truly felt about participating in those recurring nude scenes.

"It wasn't my main go to thing in the world at all," Van Houten revealed. "... The Dutch are quite open-minded, we're a little easier with that. However it's never comfortable being the only one undressed on set. It was before I had a child. I could be more uncomfortable right now. The times have changed in several ways. Back then, it was all a little bit overwhelming. No one forced me into anything, yet in hindsight I could have been a little bit more careful with it."

because the series started to prepare an obvious shift toward displaying much less nudity, it became clear to several people involved that the storyline was strong enough for the show to live with, well, a lot more clothes. And any time asked whether or not this had anything to do with #MeToo and the ever-changing landscape, Carise mentioned, "Yes. It also showed that you don’t need it."

But although the nude scenes weren't Van Houten's preference part about her job, there is lots she misses about Game of Thrones. And like us, she's starting to feel its absence. "For the initial time, I'm feeling it," she mentioned. "There was routinely per year between shoots so we were used to it, yet around right now we could be getting into the script again, getting in touch together, speculating over what would happen to each other's characters. I do feel a certain emptiness..." Don't we all, Carise. Don't we all.
